One of our joys of mowing — even when it’s not mowing season — is when we get to see photographs of your lawn and landscape life throughout the year.
From time to time, we’ll come across a vintage or even historic photo that takes our breath away. Better still is when it’s accompanied by a compelling backstory or family history.
There are photos to chronicle a generation of a family, or to capture a telling detail about specific time or place in America. Maybe you have such pictures to share.
We recently came across this incredible picture from more than 17-thousand feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, off the Santa Cruz Islands.
It is an International Harvester tractor, circa 1942. It is securely fastened to the deck of the USS Hornet, a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier that was lost during World War II. It was sunk and 140 sailors died after a coordinated attack by Japanese dive bombers and torpedoes.
The Hornet took part in the Battle of Midway and other important naval battles, but is perhaps best known for launching the first American air raids on Japan during the war.
