History

The Eclipse Lawn Mower Company was founded in Prophetstown, Illinois, in 1904 by Fred Adams, who had invented the self-sharpening lawn mower in 1900. Adams began building mowers in his parent’s barn and quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality, innovative machines.

By 1930, Eclipse had become the world’s largest mower company. The company’s success was due in part to its commitment to quality and innovation. Eclipse mowers were known for their durability, ease of use, and cutting performance.

Some of Eclipse’s most popular models included:

  • Eclipse “The Lady” sidewheel mower: This mower was known for its smooth, even cut and its ability to handle tough terrain.

  • Eclipse “The Hi-Boy” high-clearance mower: This mower was designed for use on tall grass and uneven terrain.

  • Eclipse “The Pow-R-Boy” garden tiller: This tiller was a popular choice for gardeners who wanted to prepare their soil for planting.

The Eclipse Lawn Mower Company was acquired by the Buffalo Bolt Company in 1945, and in 1950 was merged into the Buffalo-Eclipse Corporation. In 1961 the company was sold to Hahn, Inc. who changed their name to Hahn-Eclipse Company.
