Since 1936, the Ace Hardware & Garden Center has been a family-run enterprise. George W. Jelinek established Grand Island Hardware Company on Fourth Street in that year. In 1960, the company merged with Ace Hardware, and the following year it became a corporation. The company relocated to its current home at 3rd and Broadwell in 1963, and in 1979, it increased in size to 30,000 square feet. President Donald L. Jelinek oversaw the acquisition of the Fremont store in 1986, the Columbus store in 1992, and the Kearney location in 1998. The fifth store opened in Elkhorn in 2013. Today, the third generation of Randy, Ron Jelinek, and Cheryl Hansen continues the legacy of excellent service and providing a wide range of products.
